All you ever needed to know about Roll Deep

If you know grime music then you may already have heard of the UK based grime group by the name of Roll Deep. Originally from London and formed in 2002, they have created four albums and released 8 singles, two of which made it in to the Top 30 UK chart positions and proved to be massive hits among all music lovers and not just those that follow grime.

Members of Roll Deep have also appeared in another grime group called Boy Better Know and members of these are well known in the UK and all around the world for their musical talent. Wiley, recently noted for teaming up with Lady GaGa for the hit single “Chillin’” is still a member of Roll Deep and actually formed the group alongside other greats such as Flow Dan and Scratchy from the “Flyin’ Squad” and if these are not familiar names to you, perhaps you should hear of their former members! Both Dizzee Rascal and Tinchy Stryder were once a part of Roll Deep and also Pitbull, all of which have recently had top 20 UK hits.

As well as being nominated for a MOBO, Roll Deep are well known for their consistent charity appearances and among the particular favorites of the groups followers is the ongoing work they do for the Love Music Hate Racism charity in which they performed at a memorial for a high profile murder story involving a teenager by the name of Anthony Walker. Not only this but their second album, released in 2007 called “Rules and Regulations” featured a video and single called “Racist People.”

As well as being well known for their participation in grime music and also for their charity work, Roll Deep is also known for projects in the Tate Modern museum. There was one project that involved many song writers as well as performers to find a piece of art that they found inspiring and then writing a song about that particular piece of art work. Roll Deep collectively chose a sculpture called “Ishi’s Light” by Anish Kapoor and following that, released a song called “Searching.” This song can still be heard on the website for the Tate Modern and also on headphones in front of the sculpture itself within the museum.

Now known as one of the biggest UK grime groups, Roll Deep are finding fame with solo projects rather than a collective group and the members are constantly switched and changed as old members leave and new members come in. It is because of this that the members are never confirmed and those that are within the group find their positions ever changing. This can be considered as a hindrance to the group’s formation but actually proves to be very useful as different aspects of everyone’s personality are added to the music that they create and different sounds and theories are explored.
With a formation that is constantly changing and a style that is adored and worshipped by music lovers everywhere, Roll Deep show no signs of slowing down and are actually perhaps the reason why the UK chart has had so many of their successes today.
